About the Artist

Susan McGuire is an emerging oil painter who has always been inspired by the calm, beauty and vibrancy of color found in the natural world.  Retreating into quiet spaces has long been a source of life for Susan; within these spaces thoughts clarify, truths whisper, and the courage to grapple with life’s complexities emerge.  These life-giving experiences are expressed in her paintings, and as such, her work has come to take on a mystical quality, inviting the viewer along for a journey.

Susan is originally from the Caribbean island of Jamaica and from an early age was drawn to many forms of art, including drawing, woodworking, and photography.  Her mother taught her how to sketch portraits and in many ways, was her first art teacher.

Professionally, Susan is a school-based college counselor and she holds master’s degrees in both Counseling and Theological Studies. She picked up a paintbrush for the first time in July 2015, in search of a peaceful outlet, and quickly realized that art was a missing piece in her life.

In rediscovering art, Susan serendipitously met African-American artist Floyd Gordon of Orangeburg, South Carolina, and long-time gallery owner Mary Mack of Charleston, SC, who both encouraged her to paint more seriously.  Susan is largely self-taught, but studies along with several artists through books and the internet. Susan’s work continues to reflect the beauty of nature. She seeks to capture it on canvas and share that beauty with others.

Susan has been represented by the Red Piano Too Art Gallery in St. Helena Island, SC, and is a member of the Bridge Art League in Richmond, CA.
